What is Form I-131?
Form I-131, also known as the Application for Travel Document, is a form used by green card holders, adjustment of status applicants, and refugees to request travel authorization. It allows individuals to apply for a re-entry permit, refugee travel document, or advance parole travel document depending on their immigration status and travel needs.
Types of Travel Documents You Can Apply for Using Form I-131
- Re-Entry Permit
- Designed for lawful permanent residents or conditional permanent residents (green card holders).
- Enables the holder to re-enter the United States after extended travel abroad without needing a returning resident visa from a U.S. embassy or consulate.
2. Refugee Travel Document
- Issued to individuals with valid refugee or asylee status or lawful permanent residents who gained their status through asylum or refugee status in the U.S.
- A Refugee Travel Document is required for refugees or asylees (not yet permanent residents) to return to the U.S. after international travel unless they have an Advance Parole Document.
- It’s important to apply for this document before leaving the United States.
3. Advance Parole
- Grants temporary entry into the United States for specific purposes without requiring a visa.
- Allows the individual to appear at a U.S. port of entry to seek parole. However, parole does not constitute permanent admission to the United States; the individual remains an “applicant for admission.”
- While Advance Parole may be accepted by transportation companies in place of a visa, it does not replace a passport requirement.
- Most Advance Parole Documents allow multiple entries, but some may be issued for single-use only.
